Chapter 13

I almost collided with Saracen as I walked out of the castle. If he hadn’t caught the door with a firm hand, it would have slammed into his face.

“I’ve got news about Reggie. And I also found out Daphne has a daughter,” I said.

Saracen swiped a hand across his forehead. “Great. I ... uh, that’s good.”

My gaze ran over him. “Are you feeling okay?”

“I’m fine. I just haven’t had a chance to rest since I took over this investigation. The family is pressing hard for a quick resolution.” Saracen was pale, sweaty, and his hands were shaking.

“Don’t lie. You’re not looking after yourself. When did you last eat? And what was it?”

“I can’t worry about eating right at the moment. Campbell needs me.”

“And you need to look after your blood sugar levels. Come with me. We’re getting something to eat and drink and then sitting down to discuss our next move.”

“Holly! We don’t have time. Isn’t that what you keep telling me?”

“We do! I’m not letting you get sick. I can’t do this all on my own. Follow me.” I strode off toward the café with Meatball. A few seconds later, Saracen caught up with us.

“I don’t want to look like I’m slacking on the job,” he said. “And Lord and Lady Audley are moving fast, so neither Alice nor Campbell have much time.”

“You need to get your blood sugar stable. You’ll be no good to anyone if you fall into a diabetic coma.” We entered the café, and I pointed at a table in the corner where it wasn’t too busy. “Sit down. I’ll be right back.” I dashed into the kitchen.

“Are you here to work?” Chef Heston said the second he spotted me. “Is everything okay with Princess Alice?”

“Oh, no! But I will make it up to you, I promise.”

“Then get what you need and get out of my way,” he said.

I grabbed a box of the low sugar flapjacks I’d been perfecting and hurried back into the café. I made two strong coffees from the self-serve machine and returned to the table where Saracen sat.

“You eat, I’ll talk,” I said as I settled opposite him. I pulled off the lid of the container and offered the flapjacks to him.

He grabbed two and took a large bite of one, chewing furiously.

I sipped my coffee and let my thoughts settle. “I saw Reggie. At first, he wasn’t friendly, but after I threatened him—”

“You threatened Reggie Frasier?”

“Eat, don’t talk. I did. I figured that was his language. He found it funny. Then he started opening up.”

“What did he tell you about Daphne?”

“He said they were having problems and thinking about splitting up.”

“He told the police the same thing. What else?”

“Reggie said he was outside smoking when Daphne was killed, although he’s not sure anyone saw him. Have you learned any more about her time of death and how she died?”

“She was hit twice over the head. The blow to the front of her temple killed her. And the marks are a match for the bottle of wine found in Princess Alice’s hand.
