Chapter 13
I almost collided with Saracen as I walked out of the castle. If he hadnât caught the door with a firm hand, it would have slammed into his face.
âIâve got news about Reggie. And I also found out Daphne has a daughter,â I said.
Saracen swiped a hand across his forehead. âGreat. I ... uh, thatâs good.â
My gaze ran over him. âAre you feeling okay?â
âIâm fine. I just havenât had a chance to rest since I took over this investigation. The family is pressing hard for a quick resolution.â Saracen was pale, sweaty, and his hands were shaking.
âDonât lie. Youâre not looking after yourself. When did you last eat? And what was it?â
âI canât worry about eating right at the moment. Campbell needs me.â
âAnd you need to look after your blood sugar levels. Come with me. Weâre getting something to eat and drink and then sitting down to discuss our next move.â
âHolly! We donât have time. Isnât that what you keep telling me?â
âWe do! Iâm not letting you get sick. I canât do this all on my own. Follow me.â I strode off toward the café with Meatball. A few seconds later, Saracen caught up with us.
âI donât want to look like Iâm slacking on the job,â he said. âAnd Lord and Lady Audley are moving fast, so neither Alice nor Campbell have much time.â
âYou need to get your blood sugar stable. Youâll be no good to anyone if you fall into a diabetic coma.â We entered the café, and I pointed at a table in the corner where it wasnât too busy. âSit down. Iâll be right back.â I dashed into the kitchen.
âAre you here to work?â Chef Heston said the second he spotted me. âIs everything okay with Princess Alice?â
âOh, no! But I will make it up to you, I promise.â
âThen get what you need and get out of my way,â he said.
I grabbed a box of the low sugar flapjacks Iâd been perfecting and hurried back into the café. I made two strong coffees from the self-serve machine and returned to the table where Saracen sat.
âYou eat, Iâll talk,â I said as I settled opposite him. I pulled off the lid of the container and offered the flapjacks to him.
He grabbed two and took a large bite of one, chewing furiously.
I sipped my coffee and let my thoughts settle. âI saw Reggie. At first, he wasnât friendly, but after I threatened himââ
âYou threatened Reggie Frasier?â
âEat, donât talk. I did. I figured that was his language. He found it funny. Then he started opening up.â
âWhat did he tell you about Daphne?â
âHe said they were having problems and thinking about splitting up.â
âHe told the police the same thing. What else?â
âReggie said he was outside smoking when Daphne was killed, although heâs not sure anyone saw him. Have you learned any more about her time of death and how she died?â
âShe was hit twice over the head. The blow to the front of her temple killed her. And the marks are a match for the bottle of wine found in Princess Aliceâs hand.
